MADELINE GEORGE PLANTING GUIDE

Thrilled about the idea of a vegetable garden, but not quite sure when the right time to plant all of the different crops is? We've got you! Madeline George has a handy planting guide to help you dial in the best time to plant all of your favorite garden vegetables here in our area.

MARCH PLANTING

March is a great time to plant cool weather crops. From planting leeks, onions, peas, potatoes, shallots, and spinach mid-March to beets, carrots, lettuce, radishes, Swiss chard, and turnips at the end of the month, many crops thrive amid the early spring frosts and freezes that are common to the Treasure Valley.

april planting

Early April is a great time to plant bare root or potted fruit, along with asparagus. By mid-April, celery and cress can be planted. Late April is a good time to plant artichokes.

may planting

May 10th is the average last frost date in the Treasure Valley, so May is the right time for planting warm weather crops like beans, corn, pumpkins/gourds/squashes, and tomatoes. Later in May is ideal for the most tender of crops, such as cucumbers, eggplants, melons, okra, and sweet potatoes.

mid-july planting

Mid-July is the perfect time to start those cool weather crops again, because by the time they're up and out of the ground, temps will be cooling off and creating the perfect environment for those same crops that thrived in the spring.
